AS FAR as "classy" events go, the Gold Coast may have its G-stringed Indy Girls and Melbourne its Brownlow (Gown-low) Awards, but neither can compete with the cl(arse)iest of them all: the annual Miss Bondi competition.

This year's "swimsuit" pageant reached its much-anticipated climax in the steamy beer-soaked surrounds of the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi last Saturday, when a bevy of fake-tanned, bikini-clad, stiletto-wearing, gum-chewing beauties paraded their pert wares before a pack of 500 sweaty, slack-jawed, bug-eyed men.

Yes, it was a recipe for mayhem, especially when one contestant's boyfriend overheard a disparaging remark from a nearby table, which unkindly suggested the beauty had a better chance auditioning for the Priscilla stage show.

No sooner had the comment been made than a flurry of fists, expletives and squeals forced the organisers to halt proceedings, sending the girls scurrying off backstage until staff could quell the baying mob.

Eventually Mariana Korac took out the title, pocketing $3500 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Gold Coast.

The MC, Tom McCarville, said the competition had been running since the 1950s, but its current incarnation had been going strong for the past decade. He was adamant the event was all good, clean fun, adding that "the girls take it very seriously … Some of the previous winners have gone on to great things, like becoming Inside Sport cover girls."

Had there ever been any complaints from the feminist movement?

"No, never. It's not like there is a mob of protesters out the front. The girls love competing and the boys love to watch it. It's for local people and they love it … We had a capacity crowd here on the weekend and it was like that during all three heats."
